- Most commonly used prokaryotic platform, especially at early stages
- Fast growth and turnaround times with a large genetic toolkit
Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis)
- Powerful enzyme secretion, especially for hydrolases or Bacillus-derived enzymes
- GRAS strain, no endotoxins, special non-sporulating strains
Pichia pastoris (P. pastoris)
- Eukaryotic GRAS host with natural post-translational modifications
- High secretory enzyme yields and efficient heme incorporation machinery
