Which biocatalysts?
KGOs (Fe(II)-α-ketoglutarate-dependent oxygenases, also known as 2-oxoglutarate-dependent oxygenase or α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase are nature’s versatile catalysts for non-activated C–H bonds. They have a natural preference for metabolic and nucleic acid-related compounds. While hydroxylation is their dominant activity, KGOs are also capable of halogenation and cyclopropanation. Operating under mild, aqueous conditions with α-ketoglutarate and O₂ as co-substrates, they bring regio- and stereoselective power to RNA and DNA transformations.
